Nació con el cine sonoro, pues la primera película sonora, El cantor de jazz, pertenecía al género musical (no se conoce ningún musical mudo, aunque la cosa habría tenido su gracia). Son películas dinámicas, alegres y desenfadadas, ideales para olvidar por completo cualquier problema. Y aunque parecía relegado al olvido, el género ha vuelto a la palestra, gracias a grandes títulos que han triunfado en las carteleras en los últimos años.

Hemos querido incluir en esta lista, los clásicos indiscutibles del género, una buena muestra de los desenfadados musicales de los años 30, las famosas operas rock de los 70, películas recientes que han vuelto a poner de moda el género, biografías de célebres cantantes con actuaciones musicales, unos pocos musicales de Bollywood que han trascendido las fronteras de La India, y algún documental.
Por supuesto, esta selección se ha elaborado utilizando premeditadamente criterios bastante subjetivos.
